Knowledge elicitation in unstructured business processes : the preliminary findings from a case study

Title: Knowledge elicitation in unstructured business processes : the preliminary findings from a case study

Authors: Yip, Jessica; Lee, W. B.; Tsui, Eric; Lui, Cherie

Abstract: This paper presents a knowledge audit methodology for unstructured processes, addressing on the phenomenal increase in the number of unstructured knowledge work. The implication of such trend is that organizations are no longer mechanistic entities but networks of complex and interdependent communities whose knowledge cannot be discovered and visualized using the traditional knowledge elicitation and representation techniques. With such argument, the authors developed a knowledge audit methodology exploring on narrative-based knowledge elicitation methods and pattern-detecting knowledge representation methods. The methodology was conducted in an unstructured process of an Information Technology Department (ITD) of a Hong Kong-based company. The results elucidate the complex activities in the studied unstructured process; its associated knowledge flow amongst stakeholders is also revealed for pattern detection. This paper contributes in opening gateway to the investigation of knowledge audit in unstructured processes.

An ontology-based expert locator system in a Web 2.0-oriented personal learning environment

Title: An ontology-based expert locator system in a Web 2.0-oriented personal learning environment

Authors: Kiu, Ching-Chieh; Tsui, Eric; Sabetzadeh, Farzad

Abstract: Personal Learning Environments (PLE) are set up by learners using a dynamic and growing set of Web 2.0 tools which, together, foster a rich knowledge, highly personalized and collaborative environment. While there is alot of ongoing work and successes in developing the Web 2.0 technologies, the issues of how to leverage on PLE to truly foster a co-learning environment and how to identify "experts" (or more knowledgeable people) in PLEs have not been explored so far. Invariably, as in any learning communities, different levels of expertise (and experience) exist in a community. Novice learners often lack the needed knowledge and experience in configuring their most effective PLEs. Successful and easy location of experts can not only improve learning processes and also enhance the quality of the environment for all learners. This paper presents an ontology-based expert locator framework for supportingpersonal learning in a Web 2.0 environment.

Description: The Artificial Intelligence Workshops (AIW) 2011 are held in conjunction the 3rd Malaysian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (MJCAI 2011), and the 3rd Semantic Technology And Knowledge Engineering Conference (STAKE 2011) at UNITEN Putrajaya Campus, Malaysia.

A Reflection of the State of Mobile Learning in Asia and a Conceptual Framework

Title: A Reflection of the State of Mobile Learning in Asia and a Conceptual Framework

Authors: Chun, Daniel; Tsui, Eric

Abstract: In Hong Kong, south of China, a predominantly Chinese speaking society, a financial capital in the world economy, a shopping paradise for mobile gadgets where we bear witness to exceptionally high penetration of mobile subscriptions and high churn of mobile phones, smartphones, 3G-enabled netbook computers and portable game devices, is also home to a relatively mature life-long learning working population and has a plethora of educational service providers catered for kids and youths, yet the notion of Mobile Learning somehow still lacks both clarity and purpose. However, there are increasing evidence that technology enhanced learning experiments which involves mobile services are jumping out of their lab and becoming pilot tests. Furthermore, we also observed an increase in the awareness of location-based, contextaware, and game-based learning theories with handheld technologies. This paper suggests that future research studies with an Asian context would be beneficial to the mobile learning community in the context of language learning, socialcultural, pedagogical implications, knowledge management, collaborative and informal learning. The paper also presents a novel conceptual framework called Heterogeneous E-Learning Portal (HELP) currently being put to trial and incubation at Hong Kong Cyberport IncuTrain Center for class booking under a mobile, open, heterogeneous, web 2.0 and collaborative environment.
