Skills for future university librarians

Title: Skills for future university librarians

Authors: O'Connor, Steve; Li, Mei

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine present librarian skills in academic libraries and to propose possible directions of future libraries on skill requirements. This study provides a valuable methodology to understand the current demands of employers for library staff. It also begins to highlight trends in how the skill set and outlook for future employees are currently being viewed. There has been a combination of these understandings with the scenario planning technique to draw threads anticipating skill requirements in three to five years. These approaches create a powerful analysis.; An examination of recent library position advertisements and job descriptions in five countries and regions showed broad communication and technology skills required in academic libraries. The key terms of skills were ranked according to the frequencies used in the advertisements and descriptions.; Original research based on data from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Hong Kong. The results are harmonised with predicted future trends from scenario planning exercises.

Approaches to the storage of low use and last copy research materials

Title: Approaches to the storage of low use and last copy research materials

Authors: O'Connor, Steve; Jilovsky, Cathie

Abstract: This paper draws together the issues regarding the retention of print collections for academic libraries in a digital environment. The discussion focuses on a fundamental mission of academic libraries – ensuring ongoing access to older research material; leaving the discussion of the other key mission, providing current and relevant publications, to be discussed in other forums.; The paper incorporates a review of approaches from the literature and from the authors' own experiences. Issues discussed include selecting material, development and management of print repositories, pros and cons of institutional or cooperative facilities and economic aspects. Although the focus is international particular references are made to the Australian experience.; The authors suggest that a network of national, and ideally international, print repositories will provide the most reliable and cost-effective solution.

Description: DOI:10.1016/j.lcats.2008.08.001

Steering a future through Scenarios: into the academic library of the future

Title: Steering a future through Scenarios: into the academic library of the future

Authors: O'Connor, Steve; Au, Ann Lai-chong

Abstract: Scenario planning as a strategic tool for future planning was explored. The case study showed how The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Library applied the process to draw up its preferred future, and illustrated the importance of involving all stakeholders in every stage for the shared future to be acceptable to all.

Description: DOI:10.1016/j.acalib.2008.11.001.
